The post-season picture is complete! The Arkansas
Golden Falcons and Newark Sugar Bears have
first-round byes while the Vancouver Iron Fist
take on the Tijuana Banditos and the Hoboken
Cutters match up against the Wanaque
Wolverines.
Let's take a look at how the playoff teams were built.

Arkansas Golden Falcons
Making their incredible wire-to-wire first-place
finish all the more remarkable, the Golden Falcons
haven't major change since Draft Day -- and didn't
make a trade all season. In fact, all but three
players (Jeff Liefer, Alex Ochoa and
J.T. Snow, all signed as free agents) were with
the team in Spring Training, with the rest of the
roster made up of protected players (15) and draft
picks (12).

Fourteen players on Arkansas's roster have been with
the team for three or more seasons, including Barry
Bonds -- taken in the 9th round of the inaugural
DMBL draft. Five more key players were added last
season: Lance Berkman, Byung-Hyun Kim,
Brad Penny and Fernando Vina were
drafted in 2001, and Roger Clemens was acquired
from Philadelphia for two picks (2nd Round in 2002,
4th Round in 2003).
Newark Sugar Bears
The core of last year's World Championship team is
back, but the supporting players were added largely on
the fly as the season went on, with several players
(most notably, Jose Canseco) added and dropped
several times. Of their 30-man roster, 12 were
protected, nine were drafted and two (Paul Lo
Duca and Felix Rodriguez) picked up in
trades. The team also inked seven mid-season free
agents -- the most of any contender.

Newark returns 14 players from last season, including
original franchise players Randy Johnson,
Chipper Jones and Jim Thome. Those
three, plus John Burkett, Charles
Johnson and Manny Ramirez, also were with
the squad during their last World Series appearance in
1997.
Vancouver Iron Fist
The Fisters have undergone some dramatic changes since
last year's World Series loss. The team made two
trades before Draft Day and three more in the second
half, shipping out franchise foundation Ken Griffey
Jr. along with Tony Armas Jr., Tom
Glavine, Javier Lopez, Scott
Sullivan, Brian Tollberg and Kip
Wells for Moises Alou, Roger Cedeno,
Al Leiter, Joe Mays, David
Weathers and Shawn Wooten. Of the current
30-man roster, 14 were protected, 10 were drafted,
four were acquired through trade and two were free
agent signings.

Only 11 players remain from the team that won the 2001
Morris Division, plus Al Leiter, who rejoins
the team after a two-year hiatus. Just three players
are left from the '94 squad, the last time Vancouver
won the World Series: Jeff Conine, Greg
Maddux and Edgar Martinez, the only player
remaining from the inaugural 1991 team.
Hoboken Cutters
The Cutters have reached the post-season in just their
second year of existence, but they've made some big
changes since Draft Day: This year's 30-man roster
includes just 12 players who were protected and eight
picked in the 2002 draft. With five players added as
free agents and five more acquired through trade,
Hoboken has more mid-season acquisitions than any
other playoff team.

The Cutters return a dozen players from their
inaugural season of 2001, but many players have
previous connections to this franchise's long,
colorful and confusing history. The Cutters were
founded (along with the Brooklyn Bean Counters) in
an expansion draft out of the remnants two tortured
franchises: The Arizona Rattlers, descended
from the team founded in 1992 as the Scranton
Sparrows (and later known as the Louisiana
Lightning and Keystone Gamblers); and the
Hawaii Volcanoes, which can trace its roots
back to a league-founding franchise, the 1991 Maine
Lobsters (later known as the San Antonio Gun
Slingers, Sacramento Seahawks and New
York Mets). The 2002 squad includes 13 players who
wore at least one of the nine uniforms on the Cutters'
family tree, including Roberto Alomar: Drafted
in the 15th round (73rd overall) by the Maine
Lobsters, Alomar has followed this franchise for 12
seasons through six cities!
Wanaque Wolverines
The Wolverines are the only post-season team to have
the same exact roster on the first and last day of the
2002 season. The roster is made up completely of
protected (14) and drafted (16) players, without a
single player added through trade or free agency
except for a couple Disabled List additions who were
dropped when the original player came back. In fact,
there's just four players who were with the team on
Draft Day who aren't still there: Rey Ordonez,
Adam Kennedy, Grant Roberts and Eric
Cammack, all released after spring training.

Like the Cutters, the Wolverines have been around for
a long time, just not always in Wanaque: This is still
very much the team that went to the playoffs last
year, as the Vatican City Cardinals. And
that team was descended directly from the
Cheyenne Warhawks, an expansion team founded in
1993. The Warhawks were renamed the Norfolk
Ewes in 1996; they became the Hillsborough
Destroyers in 1998. Unlike the Cutters, however,
the roster was passed down intact through each move.
It's the fourth time this franchise has reached the
playoffs, but they've never reached the World Series.
Fourteen players have been with this franchise at one
time or another, with 10 players on the roster for
three or more seasons. Jeff Cirillo is the
senior member OF the squad, having stuck around for
seven straight seasons (and four name changes). Joe
Girardi, a member OF the original '93 Warhawks, is
back with this franchise for the first time in five
seasons. There's also the case OF Cory Bailey,
the only player to play for both DMBL teams owned by
J. Marshall Knowsley -- the Wolverines and the
Toledo Mutthens (1996-1999). That team would
reach the playoffs two years ago as the Kentucky
Hillbillies; they're now known as the Tijuana
Banditos, Vancouver's first-round opponent!
Tijuana Banditos
The Banditos' roster is made up OF 12 protected
players, 11 draftees, six free agents and one player
acquired through trade (Tony Batista). They
also made a trade before draft day, picking up
Edgar Renteria for Craig Biggio. The
Banditos' free agent signings included reliever
Chad Bradford, who was drafted by the team,
then released twice before finally sticking for the
final two months of the season.

The Banditos, previously known as the Kentucky
Hillbillies (2000-2001) and Toledo Mutthens
(1996-1999), reached the playoffs two years ago, but
were swept in the first round by Vancouver. That team
is almost completely gone, with only three players
(Ellis Burks, Vladimir Guerrero and
Rey Sanchez) remaining. In fact, 18 players are
making their debut with the Banditos this season,
tying them with Hoboken and Vancouver for the most new
players of any team in the post-season. Only Burks and
Guerrero have been with the team for three or more
seasons.
Owner Paul Barbosa had three previous teams in
the DMBL, the Newark Crimewave (1991), Tampa
Bay Sweat Sox (1992-1994) and the Lisbon
Diabos (1997), but no current Bandito played for a
previous Barbosa-owned team. Barbosa inherited the
Mutthens from current Wolverines' owner J. Marshall
Knowsley. Ironically, Knowsley's '96 Mutthens were
built from the remnants of Barbosa's Sweat Sox, along
with two other defunct teams.
