2005 Playoff Teams: How They Were Built

The post-season picture is complete! The division champion Newark Sugar Bears and Arkansas Golden Falcons have first-round byes while four teams battle it out in the wild card round: The third-seeded Vancouver Iron Fist take on the sixth-seeded Matthew's Mighty Men of Stanhope, and the fourth-place Philadelphia Endzone Animals match up against the fifth-seeded Honolulu Sharks.

Let's take a look at how the playoff teams were built.

"How Acquired" reflects only the most recent acquisition of the player; for example, a player who is drafted, released and then re-signed, is considered a "free agent" acquisition. "Years With Team" counts only a player's service time with the major-league team and does not credit them for time spent with the franchise in its minor-league system. For example, Newark's Hideki Matsui was drafted in 2003 but was stashed away on their ineligible list that season; he didn't make his DMBL debut until last season, so he has just two years with the Sugar Bears.

Newark Sugar Bears (107-55)
Newark Sugar BearsHanover Division champions for a fifth straight year, the defending DMBL Champions are largely intact, with 15 players returning from last year's World Series winners. The Sugar Bears also have nine players from the '02 World's Champions, six from '01 and three from the '97 champs. Those three -- Chipper Jones, Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome -- have been with the team for all four titles. (Randy Johnson, who has been with the team since '96, missed the entire '97 season due to injury.)

No admittance! Hoping to maintain that championship chemistry, Newark GM Craig "Butch" Garretson kept the clubhouse stable this season, adding just five players who weren't with the team on Opening Day -- Jayson Werth, Mike Gonzalez, Kevin Millwood, Mike Remlinger and Matt Wise. (And Millwood was re-signed after being drafted but then cut in spring training.)... The Sugar Bears are the only post-season team on which every player from the 30-man roster appeared in at least one game this season.

Arkansas Golden Falcons (103-59)
Arkansas Golden FalconsPerhaps appropriate to their name, the Golden Falcons were built on the fly this season. With the core of Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling to build around, GM Mike "Stump" Matiash cobbled together an offense and a bullpen through in-season moves -- nearly half the 30-man roster came via trade or free agency rather than draft or keeper list. In fact, Arkansas -- which won the Morris Division for a fourth-straight year this season -- still has just 11 out of the 15 keeper list players it started the season with: Kevin Brown, Ken Harvey and Sean Burroughs were released, while C.C. Sabathia was traded.

Newbies and veterans: The Golden Falcons don't have much of a middle class this year: nine of the 30 players on the roster have been here for five or more seasons (the most of any playoff team). On the other hand, 16 have been here just one year -- or no years, as in the case of three players who are on the roster but didn't appear in a game for the Golden Falcons this season. That leaves just five guys who aren't either extreme... Five-time World's Champions, the Golden Falcons have plenty of big game experience. They return eight players from the '03 champs, six from '99, four from '98, three from '96 and two -- Barry Bonds and Barry Larkin -- from the '92 title team.

Vancouver Iron Fist (93-69)
Vancouver Iron FistThe Iron Fist haven't been in the post-season in two years, but this historic franchise has a tremendous amount of playoff experience -- after all, they had been to the big dance for 10 straight seasons ('93-'02). On the 30-man roster, there's nine players from the team's last playoff appearance (2002), five from its last World Series appearance (2001) and one -- Greg Maddux -- from its last World Series winner in 1994. (Edgar Martinez missed the entire '94 season due to injury, but was with the team for its '91 and '93 championships.)

We've been here before: The Iron Fist had five draft picks in the first three rounds this year. Every one in this group of five except the last -- SS Omar Infante (#63) -- is still with the team. The Iron Fist also still have the very last man they took in this year's draft -- Edgar Martinez, selected in the fifth round of the supplemental draft (#254 overall). Martinez was released in spring training, but GM Yaro Zajac brought him back as a free agent in August and he could make the post-season roster as a DH... Two players who are on the roster but didn't appear in a game for the team this season: Brandon Claussen, a 26-year-old rookie southpaw starter, and Trot Nixon, who missed the entire DMBL season due to injury and is ineligible for the playoffs. Nixon is remembered as a Rattlesnakes ('00-'04), but he actually made his rookie debut with the Iron Fist in '00, hitting .182 in 12 games before being traded to Columbia for pitcher Omar Daal.

Philadelphia Endzone Animals (92-70)
Philadelphia Endzone AnimalsThe Endzone Animals are in the post-season for the first time in their franchise history, but GM Anthony "Bocci" Pucci made sure to bring in some seasoned veterans. Three players on the team have World Series rings: Ray Durham ('97 with Newark, '00 with Jerusalem), Paul Lo Duca (Newark in '02 and '04) and Ricky Bottalico (Newark, '97). In fact, it's no coincidence that this team -- which never finished above 9th in its eight-year history -- turned over more of its roster from last season than any other playoff team. Seventeen of Philly's 30 players are here for the first time, and just two -- J.D. Drew and Scott Rolen -- have been here for five years or more.

Who are these guys? The Endzone Animals have four players on their 30-man roster who didn't have a single appearance with the big club this year -- OF Magglio Ordonez, who spent the entire season rehabbing an injury, and free-agent pitchers John Patterson, Cliff Politte and Nate Robertson. Ordonez is ineligible, but any or all of the three pitchers could theoretically make their way onto Philly's post-season roster.

Honolulu Sharks (91-71)
Honolulu SharksThe Sharks are in the playoffs as the No. 5 seed for the third straight year, and nearly half of the 30-man roster -- 12 players -- has been with the team for each of those post-seasons. Consistency and chemistry is obviously importan to GM Adam Kozubal -- for the second year in a row, the entire 30-man roster is exactly as it was on Opening Day! Kozubal protected 15, drafted 15, and left everything else up to his field manager.

Welcome back: Turning up the comfort level a further notch in the Honolulu clubhouse, Kozubal opened up his checkbook last winter to bring back four veterans from the team's past: Jermaine Dye, Tony Womack, Eric Young and Danny Graves. Dye, who went 2-for-9 as a rookie getting a cup of coffee with the big club at the end of its inaugural '97 season, is the only "original Shark" on the roster. Womack was a rookie with the '98 team, but left after 2000. Young and Graves were both on the '02 team that missed the playoffs by a single game, and the '03 team that was the first to reach the post-season. But the heart and soul of the squad remains Jason Giambi, Shawn Green and Jason Kendall, who broke onto the scene together with the woeful 100-loss 1999 Sharks and have never left.

Stanhope Mighty Men (86-76)
Stanhope Mighty MenUnlike last season, when Stanhope turned over a third of its 30-man roster en route to the post-season, this year Mighty Man GM David Landsman stuck to the game plan -- all but two members of the 30-man roster were with the team on Opening Day. The first newcomer, free agent Shawn Estes, never saw action with the big club and isn't likely to be on the post-season roster. But the other addition -- veteran Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, acquired in a July trade with Las Vegas -- could be the team's ace in the playoffs after going 7-2 with a 3.03 ERA, 11.3 R/9 in 12 starts for the Mites.

Millennium Men: This team has five members of its '00 World Series champions: Derek Jeter, Mike Lowell, Mariano Rivera and Kerry Wood, who never left, and Eli Marrero, who left after '00, came back in '03, left again, and returns once more. Those five are the only remaining Mighty Men who played for the franchise when it was in Jerusalem. Jeter and Rivera, who have each been with the team since 1997, are the longest-serving Mighty Men.
