2003 Playoff Teams: How They Were Built

The post-season picture is complete! The division champion Newark Sugar Bears and Arkansas Golden Falcons have first-round byes while four teams battle it out in the wild card round: The third-seeded Stanhope Mighty Men take on No. 6 Hillsborough Destroyers and the fourth-place Carolina Mudcats match up against the fifth-seeded Honolulu Sharks.

Let's take a look at how the playoff teams were built.

Newark Sugar Bears (111-51)
The two-time defending World Champions have returned their core stars, with 10 players who have been with the team for all three championship runs. But the supporting cast was added largely during the season, as the Sugar Bears have the most mid-season additions (10) of any contender, with five players added through trades (most notably, Mike Piazza) and five players signed as free agents -- which includes long-time Sugar Bear Charles Johnson, who was drafted by Newark in the 10th round this year but then was cut in April, only to re-sign with the team in August. Newark's five trade acquisitions are the most of any playoff team this season.

Newark natives: The Sugar Bears return 14 players from last season, including original franchise players Randy Johnson, Chipper Jones and Jim Thome, who are tied for the team lead in longevity at eight years each. Those three, plus Charles Johnson and Manny Ramirez, also were with the squad during their first World Series win in 1997. And seven players -- Jones, Ramirez, Thome, the two Johnsons and Bobby Abreu and Keith Foulke -- are trying for their fourth World Series ring as members of the Sugar Bears.

Arkansas Golden Falcons (94-68)
The Golden Falcons are making their league-record 11th-straight playoff appearance -- the only year they didn't make it was the inaugural 1991 season, when only the top two teams made it (and the Falcs finished third). Arkansas has been in four of the last five World's Championships, and in large part this is the same team that won it all in '98 and '99. The Falcons lead all playoff teams in longevity whether you look at two or more seasons (17), three or more (15), four or more (11), five or more (8) and so on -- all the way up to two guys who've been with the team for 10 seasons! That, of course, includes Barry Bonds -- who was taken in the 9th round of the inaugural DMBL draft. The clubhouse has largely been intact this season as well, with 23 out of the 30 players having been with the team since Spring Training -- and of the seven players added since, two (Joe Girardi and Jose Vizcaino) are former Golden Falcons.

Been there, done that: Seventeen of the 30 players on Arkansas's roster have reached the World Series as a Golden Falcon before, and Al Leiter and Julio Franco have reached the title series as members of the Iron Fist.

Stanhope Mighty Men (94-68)
Proving that it's possible to build a contender through the draft and free agency, the Mighty Men -- who finished tied for the league's third-worst record last year -- have the most new faces (18) of any playoff team, with 12 players added through the draft and another six, including Draft Day acquisition Cliff Floyd, added through mid-season pick-ups. And, with Eli Marrero and Steve Karsay re-joining the team after a one-year hiatus, the Stanhope clubhouse was thoroughly fumigated after last year's 92 losses, with only 10 guys back from that team.

Where have you gone, Andy Pettitte? The three protected-list players who are no longer with the team are Andy Pettitte, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Lieberthal. Pettitte was traded to Newark for Floyd on Draft Day, while Griffey and Lieberthal were sent to Brooklyn for Derek Lowe and Tom Glavine. The trade of Pettitte (1996-2002) and Lieberthal (1999-2000) means just seven players remain from the 2000 squad that won the World Series, and only one -- Bernie Williams -- who has been with the squad since it was founded as the Jerusalem Rabbis in 1996.

Carolina Mudcats (88-74)
The Mudcats are making their third playoff appearance in franchise history, having been here before as a wild card in 1999 and 2001. Carolina finished with decent draft position last year, with the league's sixth-worst record, but they had the least fruitful draft of any playoff team: Just seven of their picks are still with the squad. The small-market Mudcats instead largely rebuilt with waiver-wire pick-ups, Rule V acquisitions and minor-league veterans, leading all playoff teams with seven in-season free agent acquisitions. The Mudcats also are one of just two post-season teams that still have all 15 keeper-list players still on the roster.

Welcome back: Carolina's seven free agents include two long-time Mudcats -- Aramis Ramirez and Rondell White -- who restructured their long-term contracts to give the front office more spending money to sustain the playoff drive. In fact, White -- a member of the team since 1999 -- is the longest-serving Mudcat. White is one of nine Mudcats who was with the team during their last playoff run in 2001; he's the only player who has been with Carolina for all three post-season appearances.

Honolulu Sharks (82-80)
The Sharks are in the playoffs for the first time in their six year existence, but they just missed it last year after finishing a game behind Tijuana for the final playoff spot. The Sharks returned 16 players from that team, tied for second-most out of the contenders; they also have the second-fewest additions after Opening Day, with 27 out of their 30-man roster having been with the team all year. The only new additions were Marquis Grissom and Joe Randa, both picked up in trades with Hoboken, and Kelly Wunsch, signed as a minor-league free agent.

Aloha means hello and good-bye: As befitting a team that didn't have much success until last year -- the Sharks averaged 96 losses a year over their first five seasons -- this team was largely built over the last two years, with just eight players who were with the squad before last year. Three of those five -- Jason Giambi, Shawn Green and Jason Kendall -- broke onto the scene with the woeful 100-loss 1999 Sharks, but stuck around long enough to see the team go from the cellar to the post-season. Another player from that '99 squad, Fernando Vina, is back after being picked up in the fourth round of this year's draft, but he didn't stick around for the tough times -- he's spent the last two years enjoying the post-season as a member of the Golden Falcons.

Hillsborough Destroyers (81-82)
This franchise has reached the playoffs for three straight seasons under three different owners. In fact, this franchise -- known as the Cheyenne Warhawks (1993-1994), Norfolk Ewes (1996-1997), Destroyers (98-00), Vatican City Cardinals (2001) and Wanaque Wolverines (2002) -- has been to the post-season five times, under four different owners! And for the second straight year, they've reached the playoffs despite playing with the same exact roster on the first and last day of the season: The Destroyers' roster is completely comprised of players who were either protected or picked up through the draft. In fact, the only transaction they made all season was releasing their extra players -- including keeper-list player Mike Hampton -- on cut-down day.

New owners, same players: Remarkably, for a franchise that has had three different owners over the last three years (and five owners in its 10-year history), the Destroyers have remained largely intact, with 15 players who were with the team over its three-year post-season run. In fact, of the 30-man roster, 10 were with the squad three years ago, the first time Scott Boehler owned the franchise! In terms of roster longevity, the well-traveled Destroyers rank with the storied Golden Falcons and Sugar Bears when it comes to holding onto their favorite players: Hillsborough 12 players back for their third year, including former Destroyers Jose Cruz Jr. and Ben Grieve, who were picked up in this year's draft. No player is still here from the franchise's first playoff run (1993-1994), but seven players have been here for five or more seasons, including seven-year players Carlos Delgado and Alex Rodriguez -- who made their DMBL debuts with the Ewes in 1997.
