Team Notes
Count Down to 2002
As a first-year franchise, Brooklyn kept their playoff hopes alive until the last week of the season, finishing just three games under .500 and four games out of the post-season. But will their 13th-ranked offense be any better next year? Their leading hitters are Raul Mondesi (.251, 27 HR, 84 RBI), Bobby Higginson (.277, 17 HR, 71 RBI) and Mark Grace (.298, 15 HR, 78 RBI), with no eligible batter topping .300, 30 HRs or 90 RBIs... The team will have a strong pitching staff, however, led by Joe Mays (17-13, 3.16), Paul Abbott (17-4, 4.25), Robb Nen (4-5, 45 SV, 3.01), Danny Graves (6-5, 32 SV, 4.15), Felix Rodriguez (9-1, 1.68) and Paul Shuey (5-3, 2 SV, 2.82).
Randa's ready
(5/31) Joe Randa said Thursday he's ready to return to action. The Bean Counters' third baseman missed almost six weeks after a traumatic locker accident left him unable to enter any enclosed space, not even a baseball stadium. Randa said he's still "a little creeped out" but was motivated to come back after reading about Herb Perry and Aaron Boone fighting over who should be Hanover's starting third baseman at the All-Star Game. "Whaaat? Those scrubs? They don't even deserve to watch the All-Star Game!" Randa shouted. "I'm going to that game and I'm going to tear this league a new one to get there. Watch out!" In his first game back, Randa went 0-3.
Bean Night announced.
This Sunday's doubleheader game will feature free bean giveaways. The first 10,000 lucky fans will receive a random grab bag filled with an assortment of beans, including jelly, lima, string, kidney and baked. "I'm hoping they have some Mexican Jumping Beans in there" said self-proclaimed number one fan, Jose Carteros.
